Ed Overbeek - Feed Sack Coat
Handcrafted from two 100-year-old Bemis A Extra Heavy Seamless grain sacks once used in Holland, Michigan.
The stenciled text, “Ed Overbeek, Holland Mich,” marks the original farm or mill that ordered these custom-printed Bemis sacks — each client could add their own name over the factory logo, creating a unique, region-specific artifact.
A second, faded stencil reading “Highland Bent” was uncovered on the interior of one sack and intentionally featured on the front — likely referring to Highland Bentgrass seed once packed inside, a crop common to early 20th-century Midwestern farms.
Every sack was woven from heavyweight cotton and meant to last a lifetime, and each bears the marks of use, time, and history. Reworked into a one-of-a-kind coat, this piece carries forward the story of early Midwestern craftsmanship — now reimagined as wearable heritage.
